Education Abroad in Saarbrücken, Germany
at HTW's Summer Immersion!
SOU Business students have a unique opportunity to study abroad at Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW or University of Applied Sciences) in Saarbrücken, Germany for about 3 weeks each Summer. Saarbrücken is situated in Southwest Germany near the borders of France and Luxemburg.
Program dates - June 20 - July 8, 2011. No student visa is necessary unless your stay is 90 days or more. Airport pick up can be arranged if SOU students arrange to travel as a group and arrive to the Frankfurt/Main airport together. Otherwise, students will need to make it to the central train station in Saarbrücken on their own. Look for student rates on airfare.
Business students abroad - Each year, the School of Business selects 5 Business students to participate in this popular program. Students receive BA 399- (4 upper division Business credits) and GL 199- Beginning German Language (4 credits) as Pass/No Pass. SOU students enjoy the insights of other international student participants in the program. The International Business class is taught in English, and students need to have a willingness to learn German.
Special program features! - SOU tuition and the HTW program registration fee are waived for SOU exchange students. In the past, the School of Business has been able to reimburse students 50% (up to $500) of their airfare upon successful completion of the program. Seems like a great deal for 8 SOU credits. Past participants have shared that they're "on-the-go" as they incorporate learning German via real-life activities; gain insight into the German and European business culture; and participate in activities or excursions to Saarbrücken, surrounding region as well as to France and Luxemburg. Application deadline/process - March 1 at School of Business. See Donna Lane, 541-552-8203, CE 102 to express interest and to pick up the first part of your application. There is a second application process through International Programs (located in Stevenson Union 321) once you've been selected by School of Business as a program participant - see "Application Forms" link for complete details. Then, you'll attend our mandatory Education Abroad Orientation to get guidance and tips from our experts.
Housing - Students stay at the local hostel, including breakfast, which is close to classes. Students are responsible for the cost.
Health Insurance - SOU enrolls all program participants in mandatory study abroad health insurance for the duration of the program per SOU policy. The cost is $55 to your student account ($11/week) through Wells Fargo of California Insurance, which allows some flexibility with arrival and departure dates.
Orientation - International Programs, and the School of Business, will help to prepare you for your experience abroad. Program participants are required to attend the Education Abroad Orientation. Orientation dates are listed in our FAQ. Additionally, there is a brief orientation upon arrival. Please get this date on your calendar now!
