Airfare - Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare after accepted to an SOU study abroad program. We recommend that you purchase a refundable ticket. Many students find cheaper flights with student rates at studentuniverse.com or statravel.com, websites that list mutliple airline prices or by checking rates of an airline in the host country.
Costs - Program costs are typically posted on the corresponding website; they vary greatly based on program length, cost of living in the region, airfare, currency exchange rate, etc. For the majority of SOU study abroad programs, students pay a program fee to one of our study abroad partners. AHA International, IE3 Global Internships, OUS International Programs and Educators Abroad Student Teaching each charge a program fee. Additionally, overall program costs exclude items such as airfare, room and board, all or some meals, study abroad health insurance, personal expenses, visa expenses, SOU International Programs' administrative fee, etc. SOU International Programs' requires you to pay a $100 fee at the time of your interview that will be applied toward the $275 SOU administrative fee charged per term of registration for your program to your SOU student account. AHA International program fee, please note the remaining AHA student budget in your AHA packet. There are a small number of SOU study abroad programs which charge SOU tuition and fees to your SOU student account. SOU study abroad program budgets are estimates. It's important that you understand the cost of your program and how scholarships, financial aid and/or loans may work with your program.

The Department of State has created a secure website where American citizens planning to travel overseas can register on line with the U.S. Government. This system replaces the requirement for Americans to register directly with the Embassy in the country where they plan to travel to or reside in. All
Embassies and Consulates have access to the website and can monitor who is in their consular district. For one-semester students, you would register as a short-term traveler. Students studying abroad for the year would register as long-term travelers. Please register with the U.S. Government on-line at: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/.
This website will walk you through the registration process.
