Honors Program

Three Ways you can Graduate with Honors:

Graduation with University Honors and Honors in [specific major]   An option for an Honors Scholar who has completed all three components of the Honors Program:  1) a required number of honors courses, 2) four approved community-based learning activities, and 3) a senior thesis or creative project in his/her major area:

  • Complete a minimum of 24 credits of Honors coursework (consisting of 6-8 classes) ideally spread across University Studies strands and/or other offerings, as available.
  • Complete 4 credits of Practicum (Ho 209 and Ho 409), including a minimum of one credit at the upper division level.  Scholars document each approved community-based learning activity by completing 1 credit of Ho 209 or Ho 409.  Only activities with a significant leadership component will qualify for Ho 409 credit.
  • Completion of a senior thesis or creative project, as specified by the major area, requiring at least 12 credits of research, thesis, and/or other appropriate coursework as determined by that major.
  • Minimum credits required: 40

Graduation with University Honors  An option for an Honors Scholar who has completed the first two components of the Honors Program but did not choose to or was unable to complete a senior thesis or creative project in his/her major area:

  • Complete a minimum of 36 credits of honors coursework (9-12 classes) ideally spread across University Studies strands and/or other offerings, as available.
  • Minimum credits required: 40

Graduation with Honors in [specific major]   Programs may elect to offer a stand-alone honors option for majors who complete a senior thesis or creative project requiring at least 12 credits of research, thesis, and/or other appropriate coursework as determined by that major, essentially completing only the third component of the honors program.  This option is not restricted to Honors Scholars.

Currently, almost all Honors courses also meet University Studies requirements.  As this program develops, we hope to steadily expand the quantity of Honors courses available and to continue to have the vast majority also meet University Studies requirements.  In addition, we will be actively recruiting majors to offer Honors in the Major.  There are a limited number currently available:  Biology and Mathematics offer a Honors in the Major option.  Chemistry's  American Chemical Society Certified Degrees is their Honors in the Major option.  In the Fine Arts, the BFA degrees are their Honors in the Major option.  Let us know if you are willing to help us reach out to your major.
