American Revolution and Early Republic Hst 456 Fall 2004
Dr. Todd F. Carney
Hst 456 is an advanced upper-division course that will explore the founding of the
United States in the years between the end of the Seven Years (French and Indian) War
and the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800. Some emphasis will be placed upon the
ideological and philosophical background and basis for the Revolution and experiments
with constitutional government in the 1770s and 1780s. The course will also examine in
some detail the rise of American politics in the 1790s as competing visions for the future
of the republic vied for ascendancy and public support.Syllabus
