Refunds and Repayment

Tuition Refund

If you must withdraw from a class or classes, you may be eligible for a refund. Refunds are based on the date the Registrar's Office receives your official notification of withdrawal, not the date you stopped attending classes. You may cancel your registration by accessing SISWeb, or notifying the registrar in person. If you withdraw after the refund period, you are responsible for 100% of tuition and fees. Term-specific dates are available here.

Date last attended class Refund calculation rate
End of the first week of the term 100%
End of the second week of the term   85%
End of the third week of the term   50%
No additional refunds none

Any tuition refund must first be applied to all debts owed to SOU, the Oregon University System, and financial aid programs. Housing refunds are also taken into consideration when determining the amount of funds to be returned to various financial aid programs. The amount of the residence hall refund is based on the number of days spent living in campus housing minus any other fees that may be assessed. Consult your residence hall contract for more information.

You will be issued a check or direct deposit after application of the refund to any and all charges remaining on the account. The refund procedure may take up to six weeks.

Financial Aid Repayment

Note: If you drop a class before it starts, but have already received financial aid for the class, you may be required to repay some, or all of your financial aid. Audited classes are not eligible for financial aid. Changing a class to an audit will make it necessary to repay some or all of your financial aid.

If you have financial aid and you withdraw from all your classes before you have completed 60.1% of the term, you could be required to repay a percentage of your financial aid. You could be eligible to keep only a portion of your aid, based on the percentage of time you have attended SOU for the current term. For example, Fall Term 2000 is 75 days in length. If you dropped all your classes during days 1 through 45 of the 75 day term, you could owe money. If you dropped all your classes on day 46 or later in the 75 day term, you would not have to repay any federal financial aid. Please note, to completely withdraw from all your classes, you must notify the Registrar in person or via SISWeb.

SOU is responsible for returning money on your behalf to the federal financial aid programs. If you are entitled to a tuition or room-and-board monetary credit, that amount will be used to repay funds to the federal source first. Tuition credits will be calculated using the OUS refund policy published in the Class Schedule. The housing office will calculate any room-and-board credits. If SOU must return more to the federal programs on your behalf than the amount of your tuition or room-and-board credit, you will be required to reimburse SOU for the difference.

In addition, you, the student, may be responsible for returning a portion of your aid. If you are required to return part of a loan, you will be permitted to do so in accordance with the loan repayment provisions in the promissory note. Unless you have used up your grace period already, you will not need to make any repayments to the loan at this time, and you will have deferments if you return to school.

If you are required to repay money to a grant, you must do so immediately. SOU will bill you.
