Application Information
To receive any form of federal aid, you must be formally admitted to Southern Oregon University with the intention of pursuing a degree or certification. Students attending for the sole purpose of additional coursework and who have no degree or certification goal are not eligible for aid. Aid recipients must be U.S. citizens, holders of permanent resident visas, or other eligible refugees. Aid recipients cannot be in default on a federal loan or owe a refund on a grant. Male students must register for Selective Service. The requirements for a student to become independent for aid purposes are stringent. To receive independent status under the age of 24, you must be one of the following: (1) married; (2) a veteran; (3) an orphan or ward of the court; (4) a graduate student; or (5) supporting your own dependent children.
To apply for Federal Financial Aid, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). There are two ways to file this application. 1. The FAFSA and Renewal FAFSA may be completed on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You may electronically sign the FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA by requesting a pin number at www.pin.ed.gov. Parents of dependent students may also apply for a PIN at the same site and sign the FAFSA electronically. Line by line help in completing the FAFSA is available on the internet. 2. The paper application can be obtained from a Financial Aid Office or from a high school counselor. The application is filled out and returned to the Federal Processor in the envelope provided with the application. If you are interested in attending Southern Oregon University, you must list SOU's school code 003219 on the FAFSA. If SOU is listed as a school you plan to attend, your information is transmitted electronically from the Federal Processor to the SOU Financial Aid Office. Up to six schools can be listed on the FAFSA. When analyzing the FAFSA, the Federal Processor takes into consideration family size, basic living expenses, income, assets, and resources. Additional documents may be requested by the Financial Aid Office in order to determine your aid eligibility. Provide these documents promptly in order to avoid further delay. If your family or financial situation changes after you have filed your FAFSA, report these changes to the Financial Aid Office. It is your responsibility to complete the application correctly, provide all additional required documents, and read the financial aid materials.
You must apply for admission through the SOU Office of Admissions to receive an award offer. No aid offer will be sent until you have completed the SOU application for admission and paid the required $50 fee.
To meet the University's March 1 deadline for financial aid "first consideration," complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov between January 1st and February 28th. Keep a copy of the confirmation page for your records. You may still apply for financial aid after the March 1 "first consideration" deadline has passed. By applying late, however, you run the risk that some aid funds will be depleted. If you meet the March 1 deadline and have applied for admission and paid the $50 admission fee, you should receive an award letter in March or April. Later applicants are notified on a rolling basis. If you are awarded a government loan, you must complete a separate loan promissory note before the loan will be processed.
