SOU has developed their Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP). The purpose of this plan is to assist the University in reducing its risk from natural hazards by identifying resources, information, and strategies for risk reduction. It will also help guide and coordinate mitigation activities on campus.
Although it is impossible to predict exactly when disasters might occur or the extent to which they might affect the campus, the university can minimize losses from natural hazards through deliberate planning and collaboration within the campus community and with the City of Ashland, and Jackson County. These plans are written and then submitted to FEMA for approval.
Part of the process allows for public comment and suggestions. In order to allow for this a draft version of the University’s NHMP is available for review. (NHMP)
Approval of this plan by FEMA will enable SOU to apply for FEMA funded grants, which assist in funding mitigation projects such as structural retrofits for earthquake preparedness.
