Special Education Program
Stand Alone Program
The Stand Alone Program is a 70-credit graduate program for those seeking a career in special education in K-12 settings. The program is designed to provide candidates with the skills and knowledge through course work, directly linked to field-based experiences. The SOU Special Education Stand Alone Program is recognized as one of the best in the state, with a 95% employment rate of graduates.
- Candidates complete the program in one year.
- The program begins in the pre-session of the summer term, ends the following spring term. (See the program of study.)
- Winter courses offered via eLearning to remote sites.
- Field placements made in home communities.
- Completion of the Program results in a Masters Degree in Education and recommendation for the Oregon Initial I teaching license with the endorsement in special education at either the elementary (K-8) or secondary (6-12) level.
Requirements for admission:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university (3.0 GPA in last 90 quarter hours)
- Admission to SOU Graduate School
- Passing score on Basic Skills Test (NES EAS, Praxis I PPST, or CBEST)
- Documented experience with children, preferably those with exceptionalities
- Prerequisite course: Foundations of special education (SOU – ED 470: The Exceptional Child) and mathematics for elementary teachers (SOU – MTH 211: Math for Elementary Teachers)
- On-campus interview
To Apply to the Program:
To apply for the Special Education Stand Alone Program you will need to submit the "Application to the SPED Stand-Alone Program" to the SOU School of Education, and the "Application for Graduate Admission" to the SOU Office of Admissions. Both applications are due by February 28, 2013.
