Literacy Programs for K-12 Teachers

1) Reading Specialist Endorsement Program

2) Literacy Education Certificate Program

Hello, my name is Jo-Anne Lau-Smith and I am a Professor in the SOU School of Education. I am the ReadOregon program adviser for students that identify SOU as their "home school."

Thank you for your interest in our Reading programs.  We offer a 24-credit Reading Specialist program that leads to an official Reading Endorsement from TSPC.  We also offer a 12-credit Literacy Education program that leads to a Reading Certificate issued from our office.

The SOU Reading Programs are part of the ReadOregon statewide program. ReadOregon, formerly known as the Collaborative Reading Education and Distance Education (CREADE) project, is a consortium in which three Oregon public universities collaborate to offer the Reading Specialist Endorsement Program and the Literacy Education Certificate Program. Courses are delivered through on-line distance education modes and other flexible formats to accommodate the schedules of teachers throughout Oregon.

The ultimate goal of both the Reading Specialist Endorsement Program and the Literacy Education Certificate Program is to improve the reading abilities of students in Oregon's schools. Courses are available in six theme areas:  literacy foundations, literacy for diverse learners, literacy strategies and methods, literacy assessment, literature, and leadership of school reading programs.  The Reading Specialist Endorsement Program also includes a reading practicum and the required PRAXIS II "Reading Specialist" exam.
