Creating Joyous Classrooms (October 22)  Using hands-on materials, this workshop will offer tools that help preschool through  primary grade children learn in ways that develop skills in a creative and supportive environment. Simultaneously this seminar will address the demands of meeting standards.

Storytelling in the Early Childhood Classroom (December 3)  Want to infuse your classroom with imagination and literacy, and have fun at the same time? Learn to use the most potent literacy tool in early-childhood education---the ancient art of storytelling!  In this workshop we’ll practice techniques for learning stories, along with the use of audience-participation and drama to promote oral fluency and pre-reading skills. We’ll cover methods for using children’s literature in storytelling, and how to extend storytelling activities to every area of the curriculum. You’ll go back to your classroom with confidence to try new skills. Fun guaranteed!
Debra Gordon Zaslow is an acclaimed speaker, storyteller and educational consultant who travels nationwide performing story programs and leading workshops. She has taught storytelling at SOU for twenty years.

Music & Theater (January 21) I Can Sing, I Can Play: Building Confidence in Young Children through Music -Using folk songs and folk games this workshop will be infused with joy, laughter and choice. This half day workshop will provide experiences to stimulate personal development and perceptual skills as well as language, movement, social interaction, thinking, listening and music making skills. Instructor Pam Vellutini has 25 years experience teaching elementary music education in the Ashland and Phoenix-Talent School Districts as well as DoDDS Germany. For the past 3 years Pam taught Music 373 at SOU, a methodology class for music and elementary education majors on how to teach and reach children through music. Pam is the founder and director of Ashland Taiko and currently runs workshops and classes for children and adults. A past board member for Music EdVentures Inc. she is still active with the organization and keeps busy promoting the Song Works approach to music education.
The second half of the day will explore creative dramatics as an educational technique that uses a child’s natural inclination for play and pretend to create and implement curriculum.  Creative dramatics is not performance, but an interactive, kinesthetic method through which to communicate curriculum to your students.  Eric Levin has been practicing and teaching creative dramatics for over thirty years.  This workshop will examine both the theory and practice of creative drama and provide participants with hands-on experiences turning curriculum into unique experiences for students.  Please come in clothes that are comfortable and allow free movement.

 Counting Leaves & Wild Hypothesis (February 11) This 8 hour workshop helps teachers utilize the outdoor classroom as a vehicle for math, science, and inquiry based activities.  Children today lack opportunities to experience nature and teachers often need ways to bring science and math to life. What better way to help them take steps towards stewardship of the natural world as they increase their understanding of the scientific method and how math relates to all areas of life.  Use your own problem solving skills in this hands-on workshop and don’t be afraid to get a little dirty!

 Anti-Bias Curriculum (March 10) The students in early childhood and elementary settings are diverse and it's imperative that teachers create a classroom culture where all students feel safe, valued, and honored. In this hands on workshop participants will learn about the intentional use of anti-bias curriculum. They will explore how anti-bias curriculum allows teachers to nurture the development of the whole child's potential through consciously addressing issues of diversity and equity in the classroom. In this workshop we will look at inclusive environments and how to create a climate and implement supplemental curriculum that encourages children to develop:
*Confidence in their own identity
*Empathy to the needs of others
*Honor and celebrate diversity
*Critical thinking skills about bias
*Ability to stand up to others who are engaged in bias behavior

 Creative use of Basic Materials: Blocks, Clay, Paint, Sand and Water Play (April 7) The use of five basic materials can provide great every day curriculum ideas. The Bing Nursery School at Stanford University has been using basic materials for the last 40 years as an essential foundation for early childhood curriculum and every generation has benefited from these materials. Simple basic materials such as, blocks, clay, paint, sand, and water, can be critical components in children's daily learning combined with other common elements, such as dramatic play, literacy, music, creative arts and story telling, and movement, etc. This session will provide a forum and practical opportunity for the preschool teachers to experience the basic materials centers and to rethink daily curriculum approaches in order to deepen the young minds and developing brains as well as enhance program practices.

 Learn about a Care Farm (April 28) (Think: Earth/Animals/People)  The day will be spent at Sanctuary One in the Applegate valley.  Together, we will compile integrated curriculum ideas to implement in your classroom & learn more about bring students to visit Sanctuary One.

 Autism Spectrum Disorder (May 19)
