Frequently Asked Questions

Who do I talk to if I'm interested in this degree?
SOU - You should contact Younghee Kim at 541-552-8247 or 1-800-552-5388 and ask for extension 8247.
RCC - You should contact Connie Denham at 541-956-7053.

Where do I take the lower division course work?
SOU - You can take your General Ed courses at SOU or RCC. The lower division (100-200) courses are only available at RCC in Medford or Grants Pass.
RCC - You can take the coursework at RCC and earn your AS degree in ECE.

Are all the ECD courses delivered on campus?
SOU - The 300 level ECD courses (which have an ED prefix) consist of two face-to-face meetings at the SOU campus, then the rest of the course is delivered online. The 400 level courses are delivered over two-way video to downlink sites at the Medford Mall and RCC in Grants Pass. On the SOU campus, the classes meet in EP 164.
RCC - Some courses are on campus in Medford and Grants Pass, others are delivered online only, and others are through two-way video between Medford and Grants Pass. None are delivered directly to SOU in Ashland.

When should I start the program or begin working on the 4 year degree?
SOU - Ideally, you should begin the coursework during your freshman year combining the ECD courses with your general education requirements (matrix). If you decide to begin working on the ECD later in your college career, you would still need to take the lower division coursework through RCC. Enrollment at both SOU and RCC (co-enrollment) is very common and will not affect your financial aid. It is important that if you plan to be enroll in classes at both RCC and SOU and receive financial aid that you complete a concurrent enrollment form and submit it to your home institution's financial aid office at least two weeks prior to the beginning of each term. The form is available online.
RCC - Toward the end of your second year at RCC you would contact Younghee Kim at SOU and take 300 level (online) transition courses while still enrolled at RCC. You will take 4-1 credit 300-level courses after or at the same time with your 2nd year ECE coursework at RCC. Following are the courses you would take:

RCC SOU
ECE 246 Child, Family, Community ED 346 Child, Family, Community
ECE 248 Children with Disabilities ED 348 Children with Disabilities
ECE 265 Children at Risk ED 365 Children at Risk
ECE 285 The Early Childhood Professional ED 385 The Early Childhood Professional

What if I don't want to delay my graduation by taking the lower division coursework?
You could minor in Education, focuing on ECD courses and majoring in your preferred field.

Can I teach with the ECD?
Yes, you can teach in early childhood settings, for example, HeadStart Programs or in private preschools. If you want to teach in public schools you will need to get a license through an Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

After I earn my ECD, how do I get into the MAT program at SOU?
If you follow the course matrix laid out by your advisor (Younghee Kim), then all of the course requirements for the ECD will fullfill the program requirements for the SOU MAT. However, you will still need to go through the process of applying for the MAT. You will still need to fulfill other requirements for the MAT - for example; PRAXIS exam, letters of recommendation and practicum in public school settings.

If I'm interested in getting my MAT, when should I meet with an advisor?
Ideally, the beginning of your Junior year you should make an appointment to meet with the MAT program advisor in the Education Dept.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to email Younghee Kim.
