Some workshops will allow you to gain hands-on experience using computers or iPads provided by SOU. Other workshops allow you to participate using your own laptop, iPad or other mobile device. If you plan to bring a laptop or mobile device, please review the information below to ensure that you will be able to access the SOU wireless network.
Using Your Own Laptop
If you are bringing a laptop with you, ensure that you have installed an anti-virus program and that it has up-to-date definitions. Some of the anti-virus programs that we recognize are Norton, MacAfee, AVG, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, ClamX (for Macintosh or Linux) and others. (Anti-virus programs are recommended but not required for Macs.) PC users also need to complete Windows updates.
NOTE: We recommend installing and updating the required programs before you arrive on campus to prevent unnecessary delays on the day of the Ed Tech Summit. Also, you will need to have administrative access to your laptop in order to download and install the SOU antivirus checking software. If you don't have administrative access to your laptop, be sure to ask for this before you arrive on campus. Otherwise, you will not be able to connect to the SOU network.
Once you are on the SOU campus, you will connect to the SOU-Wireless network. After connecting to SOU-Wireless, open your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.). Please scroll down the sign-in page until you see the “Guest” sign-in. This sign-in process is required for both PC and Mac users. Your laptop will be checked for anti-virus programs and updates. If you pass this check, you will be allowed access to the Internet for a 24-hour period. If you fail this check, your computer will be put into a limited network area where you’ll still be able to download updates and antivirus so that you can gain access to the Internet. This registration process will be necessary for Internet access on the day of the event or if your 24 hour access has expired.
iPhones, iPads, and Android Cellphones and Tablets
Smart phones and tablets will not be prompted for registration or the policy key download. Simply connect to SOU-Wireless with your mobile device.
