Grade level: 7-8

Girls are nominated by their school's science, math, and technology teachers.

The AWSEM (Advocates for Woman in Science, Engineering, and Math) Symposium is a one-day symposium intended to motivate middle school girls to pursue higher education and careers in the areas of science, engineering and math. The AWSEM program introduces middle school girls to professional women role models providing an opportunity for girls to participate in a variety of experiences related to these fields.

The day will begin with a variety of discovery activities. Participants then select and attend hands-on workshops covering topics such as forensic science, veterinary medicine, chemistry, and more. A drama group will perform during the luncheon. The day will wrap up with recognition of the attendees.

Throughout the day, female college students will be available to discuss their achievements and enrichment opportunities with the girls. Each participant, who is nominated by their school, will attend three of the nine hands-on workshops of their choice. The workshops are specialized so girls can experience elements of a career in the sciences and discuss this career with the professional women conducting the workshops. Presenters are women from the local community who are chosen not only for their professional backgrounds and careers, but also for their ability to enthusiastically share their interest in these fields. The number of participants for each workshop is limited so the presenters will be able to provide individual attention to each participant. To offer even more time for informal discussion, participants may sit with the presenters and enjoy lunch together.
