Literacy Education Course of Study
"Hello, I'm Jo-Anne Lau-Smith from the SOU School of Education and I want to thank you for your interest in the ReadOregon, formerly known as the Collaborative Reading Education and Distance Education project. We are proud to announce the addition of ReadOregon to our teacher education program here at Southern Oregon University. We worked with five of Oregon's public universities with approved teacher education programs to develop 40 new literacy courses as part of two programs: a literacy education course of study for general classroom teachers, and a program leading to a reading endorsement. Courses are delivered through distance education and other flexible formats to accommodate the schedules of teachers throughout the State of Oregon. Funding for this project is through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).
The ultimate goal of both the new Literacy Education Course of Study and the Reading Endorsement Program is to improve the reading abilities of students in Oregon's schools. Courses are available in the areas of literacy foundations, literacy for diverse learners, literacy strategies and methods, assessment, literature, and leadership of school reading programs."
