Criminology and Criminal Justice

Community Based Learning

The Criminology & Criminal Justice Department is fully engaged with SOU’s emphasis on Community Based Learning. We are proud to offer our students a comprehensive criminal justice education that involves instruction in the theoretical foundation of the discipline as well as its practical application. CCJ students are encouraged to volunteer at a variety of criminal justice and related agencies. They are also required to complete an internship at the agency of their choice. Beyond volunteering and required community based learning experiences, the CCJ Department and Criminology Club sponsor and organize a number of tours and hands-on simulation training events. For example, an annual visit to Pelican Bay State Prison has taken place for many years and simulation training events include the Lock-In, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Day and Counter Terrorism Crime Scene Investigation (CT/CSI).
