Dennis teaches a range of courses in the area of journalism, visual journalism, digital media and technology and society. He is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the National Press Photographers Association and the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education. Since 2002, he has been an editor for the journal Visual Communication Quarterly as well as frequent reviewer for the Journal of American Culture. Publications include, “Documentary Photography and Objectivity,” Conover, T. Graphic Communications Today. Fifth Edition (2003), “Picturing Class,” In Heider, D. Ed. Class and News, (2003), and “The Archive and The Image: Historical Research in the Shape of Socialized Knowledge,”  The Handbook of Visual Communication Research, (2004). Since 2003, Dennis has maintained his "Big Picture" blog, which in 2006 was named as a top innovator in photography by American Photo magazine. In 2007, Dennis exhibited his documentary photography from Central America at the Schneider Museum of Art. At SOU, Dennis' committee work has included Faculty Senate, Technology Council, Library, Student Affairs, Student Assement, Writing Assessment, International Studies, Family Housing, and the Faculty Roles, Responsibilities and Rewards Task Force.
