Why should I try Community-based Learning in my classes?

  • More lively class discussions and increased student participation
  • Greater participant retention of course material
  • Increased student- and self-awareness of community and "real world" issues
  • More innovative approaches to classroom instruction
  • Enhanced opportunities for research and publication

What resources are available?

The Office of Community Based Learning provides the following support for SOU faculty:

  • Logistical support (contacting and orienting agencies, providing forms, monitoring, record keeping, evaluation, etc.)
  • Sample syllabi, discipline-specific resource materials and reflection ideas 
  • Workshops and roundtables with other faculty
  • One-on-one planning consultation
  • Supportive network (other faculty on campus participating in Community-based Learning)
  • An initial planning grant for CBL designation
  • Reccomendations and Policies:
    • Managing risk, SOU policy, and safety guidelines to discuss with students
    • Adjusting requirements for students taking multiple CBL classes in one semester
    • Offering pre-planned projects vs. student-initiated projects
