MM 512 Budget and Finance

3 credits

Prepares managers to understand the various financial tools available in most organizational frameworks. Students develop an appreciation of both the theories and applications of financial practices to aid in their fiscal decision making. Students must demonstrate an understanding of basic accounting and budgeting concepts before entering this course.

MM 513 Strategic Planning and Implementation

3 credits

Advanced course in the development and use of strategic planning in managing successful organizations within a dynamic and diverse environment. Students demonstrate their expertise in using strategic planning and policy concepts through case-study analysis and simulation exercises.

MM 514 Practical Research, Analysis, and Decision Making

3 credits

Examines the relationship between practice and research in organizational decision making, with special emphasis on the role of research professionals. Students acquire the skill and understanding required for them to critically review and competently interpret research findings in a decision-making context.

MM 515 Management Information Systems

3 credits

Provides a broad overview of contemporary Management Information Systems (MIS). Describes the diverse technical, managerial and professional knowledge of an MIS manager at an awareness level for a non MIS manager. The emphasis is on both the data component of information systems, and the management behavior (i.e., knowledge and skills) necessary to successfully manage an Information Systems organization. Current trends and drivers, including those emerging technologies that affect the present and future of Information Systems are presented as well.

MM 516 Organizational Leadership and Communication

3 credits

Surveys the theoretical frameworks, empirical literature, and requisite skills associated with effective organizational leadership and communication. Examines questions of bureaucracy, culture, power, reciprocal influence, employee involvement, and other central issues from an organizational and communicative perspective.

MM 517 The Human Resource Environment

3 credits

Focuses on the critical issues and the strategic questions that the manager needs to know to effectively manage employees in the coming century. Emphasis is on applied skills relevant to employees in all parts of the organization including recruitment, selection, compensation, job evaluation, and employee development.

MM 518 Marketing for Public and Private Organizations

3 credits

Covers the planning and implementation of marketing strategies, case analysis, research strategy applications, and evaluation of strategies in marketing decisions. The main emphasis is on solving actual marketing problems faced by diverse organizations using concepts and strategies developed from business marketing.

MM 519 Legal Issues in Management

3 credits

Designed to acquaint the manager with fundamental legal concepts in the fields of personal liability including personal injury, malpractice, product liability, and the elements of defenses of a case. Students are introduced to concepts associated with agreements and contracts including development, timing, and implementation. A brief introduction to employment law covers principles for employers and the fundamentals defining wrongful termination.

MM 520 Orientation to Graduate Study for the Management Professional

1 credit

A gateway course required for all entering participants in the Master in Management program. Provides a means for students and faculty to acquaint each other on expectations for the program and to become familiar with the graduate school experience. Emphasis is on exposure to academic culture, practices, and the unique structure and orientation of the MIM program.

MM 521 Society, Ethics, and Management

1 credit

Considers the relationship between common management values and those held by society as a whole, as well as those held by various groups that compose our diverse social milieu. Students, faculty, and community professionals are brought together to describe, critique, and evaluate the connections between management principles and their connection to contemporary issues from a variety of perspectives.

MM 522 Seminar on The Guru Guide

1 credit

Topics of common interest to organizational managers from all sectors. The information presented is based on the book, The Guru Guide, edited by Joseph and Jimmy Boyett. Selected topics include leadership vs. management; managing change; creating high-performance organizations through teamwork; the pursuit of market leadership; managing and motivating people; and business, work, and society.
