Hum 147, 148 Form and Value in the Arts

4 credits each

Interdisciplinary approach to selected topics in the relation of art to other areas such as optics and the invention of linear perspective; Classicism and art history; humor and beauty; philosophy and art; imitation, simulation, and illusion. Topics are identified in their historical context from ancient to modern.

Focuses on the role of religion in human experience and awareness of its place in our culture.

Hum 295 Masterpieces of Film

4 credits

A study of representative great films whose techniques have shaped the form as we know it today. The course typically covers American and European silent films and films from the 1930s and 1940s.

Hum 296 Film Genres

4 credits

The study of popular film genres such as the western, the musical, the thriller, science fiction, the detective story, the epic, and comedy of silent films. Emphasis is on cultural and artistic value, characteristics of each form, and variations within forms.

Hum 297 Major Film Directors

4 credits

A study of the works of selected international film directors such as Hitchcock, Eisenstein, Kurosawa, Bergman, Wells, Altman, Fellini, and Bunuel whose contributions to cinematic art have been significant.

Hum 350 Topics in French Film

3­4 credits

Study of selected topics in French cinema, focusing on insights into French culture as seen through film. Recent topics include: Feminine Images in French Film, French Film of the '80s, and French Film and Society. May be repeated for credit when topic changes.
