The School of Arts and Letters encompasses a spectrum of courses and programs offered within the departments of Art, Communication, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures (French, German, Japanese, and Spanish), Music, and Theatre Arts.

In addition, the school offers courses in general humanities, philosophy, and religion. Students may choose from a variety of degree programs in each area and are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary activities between departments. Also within Arts and Letters is the University's Honors Program, Women's Studies, Video Production, Chamber Music Concerts, the Oregon Writers project, the Shakespeare Center, the Schneider Museum, KSOC Radio, and The Siskiyou newspaper.

The School of Arts and Letters promotes such activities as theatrical productions, art exhibitions, musical performances, production of a nationally distributed literary journal, poetry readings, speech tournaments, and lectures within the University and the southern Oregon region. Students may become involved in a variety of practicum, work and study abroad opportunities. In the past several years substantial program enhancements have been made in the areas of Japanese language, video production, sculpture, printmaking, and music computer technology. The Oregon University System has designated Southern Oregon University as a center of excellence for the fine and performing arts.

Minors

Minors offered are: American literature, art, art history, British literature, human communication, creative writing, film studies (proposed), French, German, journalism, language and writing, music, philosophy, photography, printmaking, Spanish, theatre, and video production. Detailed descriptions of these programs are provided under the appropriate departmental listings.

Facilities

The School of Arts and Letters has audiovisual laboratory facilities available for practical instruction in telecommunication, English language writing skills, and foreign language study. The music and theatre arts buildings are two of the finest teaching facilities in the state.

The music building is fully equipped with practice space for individual students, rehearsal halls for ensembles, and a widely praised concert auditorium.

The theatre arts building is equipped with modern staging facilities containing two main areas for the presentation of plays. The next major construction on campus is to be the Southern Oregon Center for the Visual Arts, which is scheduled to open in 2000. The privately funded Schneider Museum of Art is pivotal in promoting the visual arts in southern Oregon.

Summer Programs

Courses, programs, and workshops offered by the School of Arts and Letters during the summer session are designed to appeal to a range of interests and needs for undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the Center for Shakespeare Studies offers summer programs (see Academic Programs, page 26).
