4 creditsStudents read material, to which they respond in both oral and written form. They also listen to and take notes on lectures and presentations from media on topics of a general focus. Upon completion of ALA 201, students demonstrate an ability to express themselves with growing confidence, accuracy, and clarity in everyday situations. Prerequisite: completion of ALA level 3 (noncredit) or a score of 66-80 on the ALA Placement Test (ALAPT).
4 creditsStudents read and understand complex narrative and expository material related to academic and professional needs. They do so under time constraints, and they also listen to and take notes on lectures from media on academic, professional, and current topics. Upon completion of ALA 301, students demonstrate an ability to express themselves fully and with confidence and accuracy, with little imprecision and extensive fluency and complexity in social, professional, or academic situations. Prerequisite: completion of ALA 201 or score of 81-90 on the ALA Placement Test (ALAPT).
4 creditsStudents listen to and take notes on lectures and presentations of an academic or professional nature; give individual speeches and group presentations on researched topics of academic or professional interest; and read and understand texts under time constraints, including academic and professional literature and media sources of article and book length. Upon completion of ALA 314, students demonstrate an ability to express themselves fully and with confidence, competence, and accuracy, with almost no imprecision and total fluency and complexity in all social and professional situations. Prerequisite: completion of ALA 301 or score of 91+ on the ALA Placement Test (ALAPT).
