Veterinary Medicine

Professional schools of veterinary medicine require two to four years of preprofessional coursework. Most successful applicants secure a bachelor's degree before entering a professional school, as many schools require students to complete a bachelor's degree before they can graduate with a DVM degree.

The State of Oregon has joined the States of Washington and Idaho in a regional program in veterinary medical education (WOI). This curriculum provides optimum use of the available facilities. Oregon selectees begin the first year of the program at Oregon State University. At the beginning of the second year, students matriculate to Washington State University. This arrangement continues through the first semester of the third year. During the remaining portion of the third year and the fourth year, students' time is spent among Oregon State University, Washington State University, and the University of Idaho, depending on students' interests and chosen areas of specialization.

Entrance Requirements. To prepare for the preveterinary medicine program at SOU, students should take coursework in the following areas during high school:
biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics (minimum three years), and English (minimum three years).

Professional School Admission. Most students apply at the beginning of their junior or senior years. Competition is extremely keen for the limited positions available in professional schools, and only students with excellent academic records are successful at gaining admission.

A suggested guide for the first year is below. Further requirements include Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Genetics. Students should consult the preveterinary advisor, Dr. Chris Oswald of the Biology Department, for advice.
