1. All students planning to major in music are required to pass an entrance audition on their major instrument. The audition is offered at the beginning of fall term and the end of each term.2. Students must choose an option in liberal arts, music-business, music instruction, or performance.
3. All music majors must fulfill piano and vocal proficiencies by the end of their sophomore year. For more information, contact the music office.
4. All music majors taking applied lessons are required to perform a jury or complete an assessment project at the end of each term.
5. All majors must pass an MuP 390 hearing before moving from lower division MuP 290 to upper division MuP 390 applied level.
6. Music majors are required to maintain a 2.75 GPA in music courses.
7. All music majors are required to pass ten terms of the 0-credit, pass/no pass course, Convocations/Concerts. For transfer students, the number of terms required depends on the number of applied music credits transferred.
8. All music majors must take Music and Computers (Mus 155). Students are encouraged to take this course during their first fall term at SOU.
9. All music majors must take the Capstone Experience course (Mus 400), which consists of a project and a research paper. Students must consult their department advisor to determine the exact nature of the capstone experience.
There are special course fees for applied music. The MuP 170, 270, 370, 470 fee is $65. The MuP 190, 290, 390, 490 fee is $15 (for majors). Majors are limited in "90" series applied music classes to 3 credits a level at 190, 290 and 6 credits a level at 390, 490 for their major instrument.
In addition to the courses listed below, music-business majors must take 8 credits of math above the level of intermediate algebra and 6 credits of economics.
