An internship is a well-defined short term work/learning experience to help students prepare for a chosen career field.  With specific and intentional learning goals, interns apply their classroom learning to the "real world," enhancing their education and adding value to the employer.  Typically students participate in projects or work with experienced professionals as they tackle day-to-day business challenges.  Here are some characteristics to keep in mind:

  • Most internships last one term (11 weeks) or one summer (12 weeks).
  • Many internship are paid, but some are unpaid depending on the organization and industry.
  • A student must work 30 hours for every one credit they wish to earn.  Most students register for four credits hours (120 work hours) to meet a core business requirement.
