Certificate Programs

Online Certificate in Nonprofit Management

Our online classes offer the opportunity to learn with the added convenience of anytime and anywhere access to coursework. SOU's online program offers a great alternative for those who are working, busy with family, or located away from SOU's campus.  Course content will mirror what students receive in the classroom, while your hands-on experience will reflect the valuable knowledge you gain by working with your local community.  Online students are awarded a Nonprofit Management  Certificate from Southern Oregon University..

Our online certificate is open to undergraduates, graduates and post baccalaureate or returning students. For those students who have attended community college and are looking to complete the Bachelors degree online, through the SOU degree completion program, you can earn your Certificate in Nonprofit Management while you simultaneously earn a bachelors in Business Management.

Online the Certificate in Nonprofit Management consists of a 35-credit program that includes 28 credits of coursework and 7 credits of internship. The Certificate in Nonprofit Management consists of Program Core, Program Electives, and Internship. Courses you have taken while pursuing your bachelors degree which address our nonprofit electives may be eligible for credit toward your nonprofit certificate. See the nonprofit manager for details.

Nonprofit Program Core

BA 480/580 - Introduction to Nonprofit Theory and Management - The course surveys the U.S. and international nonprofit sector, explores in-depth important legal and tax implications for nonprofit organizations, and reviews seven major management disciplines operating in any successful nonprofit organization. This course is a “must have” for anyone working with a newly formed nonprofit, nonprofit board members, career professionals, or those wishing to enter the field. 

BA 460/560 - Nonprofit Accounting and Financial Management - This course reviews key accounting concepts critical to any nonprofit organization. Important aspects of financial management from budgeting to financial controls will be explored. Students will learn how to read, interpret and present financial statements with confidence. The course will address key aspects of risk management and examine recent IRS changes and reporting guidelines.

BA 430A&B/530A&B - Nonprofit Organization Management - Nonprofit organization management reviews key responsibilities of the nonprofit leader as it pertains to organizational effectiveness. The in-depth focus of this class is to explore further the concepts of nonprofit leadership, building effective boards, and mobilizing and managing volunteer resources for greater impact.

BA 407/507 - Fundraising Fundamentals - This class is for nonprofits of any size and students who want to apply what they have learned in the classroom. Fundraising practices and concepts addressed in this class include major gifts, direct and indirect methods of solicitation, annual funds, special events, capital campaigns, planned giving and endowments. In addition, the course covers fundraising ethics, donor prospect research, and donor management.

Program Electives

Students will continue their nonprofit education by completing three important electives: Program Planning, Human Resource Management, and Marketing.

PSY 429/529 Program Development - Program development is an essential discipline and important to the development and delivery of nonprofit programs involving client-centered services. Program Development explores principles, processes, and practices involved in creation of programs in both public and private nonprofit institutions. This course emphasizes the acquisition of skills necessary for effective program planning.

BA 374 Organization Behavior and Management - Introductory survey of management principles related to staff and staff development. Students develop an understanding of all management types - - for both large and small private organizations. This course applies a systems approach to managerial functions of planning, leading, organizing, controlling, and staffing.

BA 330 Marketing - Key to nonprofit awareness and fundraising effectiveness, principles of marketing introduces disciplines related to assessing the needs of the market, target marketing, and promotional strategies.

Internship

Long regarded as a key characteristic of quality nonprofit certificate programs, the internship experience is designed to strengthen your knowledge through work in the field. Within the SOU program framework, students complete 7-credit hours of internship. All online students are encouraged to perform internship work in their local community to facilitate networking and to allow students to get the most from their education experience. Many elect to use their internship to help their community or to work on activities and programs that are beneficial to organizations where they work or volunteer.
