Dr. Christianson received his PhD from the
University of California at Santa Barbara in 1976. Studying
under Dr. Beatrice Sweeney, he pursued a number of avenues to
illuminate the mechanism(s) of circadian rhythmicity in the single-celled
marine dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra. [Click
here for photo.] His dissertation is titled "Studies on the
Circadian Rhythmicity of the Marine Dinoflagellate Gonyaulax
polyedra." While at Santa Barbara he was a teaching assistant
in Introductory Biology and Biochemistry over a peiod of one year, a National
Science Foundation Trainee for three years, and he coordinated
the major's Introductory Biology course for seven years.
Since 1980 Dr. Christianson has been at Southern
Oregon University, coordinating and teaching in the General
Biology program for non-majors. He has also taught in the introductory
sequence for biology majors, Marine Biology and Diversity of Life.
Dr. Christianson acted as chair of the Biology Department during
spring term 1996 while Frank Lang, the chair of the department,
was on sabbatical leave. In winter term 1997 Dr. Christianson
was elected chair of the department by his colleagues, with his
term beginning on 1 July 1997 and concluding on 16 June, 2003.
In June 2001, Dr. Christianson was elected Executive Director of the AAAS, Pacific Division, with a term of three years to commence on 15 June 2002. In January 2002, the Executive Committee of the AAAS, Pacific Division, upon the resignation of the Executive Director, appointed Dr. Christianson Interim Executive Director until his three year term began in June. In October 2004 Dr. Christianson's term as Executive Director was extended by the Executive Committee to June 2008.
