This taxon contains components of a species complex (C. byssacea sens. lat.), described by Schuster (1988) as being "perhaps the most variable and difficult species of the hepatics in our area."
The collection represented on this page is from Mason Co., Washington, growing over mosses at dripping base of south-facing bluffs above Hamma Hamma River, in partially shaded overhang, 19 December 2000.
