~ Plus Weekend Field Trips ~

Biology 442/542
4 Credits

Dr. Steven Jessup

Course Learning Objectives:

Mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens are now recognized as deserving the same detailed study, appreciation, and protection given to flowering plants, yet the cryptogamic flora is virtually unexplored territory for all but a small number of botanists.  This course is a study of morphology, life cycles, systematics, and ecology of this diverse group of organisms.  The course is built around intensive lab sessions and class excursions to a diverse array of habitats where we will explore, observe and collect bryophytes.  Weekend collecting trips will provide material for study in the laboratory sessions where microscopy, dissection technique, and principles of identification will be learned and practiced.  Participants will learn to recognize common genera and species and gain experience with microtechnique used in bryology and lichenology.

The course will also include a thorough introduction to the scientific literature.  The class will work in project teams to contribute specimens to a growing reference collection of bryophytes and lichens in the SOU herbarium.  We will conduct cryptogamic surveys for botanically significant areas in the Klamath Mountains and selected areas along the Oregon coast.

This course will provide an opportunity to acquire expertise in a field that is, with the blossoming of ecosystem management in the Pacific Northwest, presently in a renaissance of scientific study and employment opportunity.

Meetings: Bi 442/542 will meet in SC 214 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 until 4:50 PM, and ocassional weekends for field excursions.  Detailed syllabus will be distributed in class.
