Thermophilic Cyanobacteria

Mickey Springs Sample #9

Mickey Springs sample #9 was collected from the edges of a deep pool at approximately 40° C.  The organisms formed a dark green submerged mat several centimeters thick on vertical walls of the pool, and in patches on the bottom of the pool. The mat has a firm gelatinous texture.

Synechococcus lividus, forming most of the mat.  Isolated cells (left) and a view into the mat (right).  Imaged at 1000x oil, phase-2.
