NCES salary study:some gross comparisons

I printed the NCES salary study and did some gross comparisons. Note, these comparisons average all Oregon Universities and so are weighted strongly toward the higher salaries at OSU, PSU, and U of O.

Data below is based on table 11 on page 17, which gives average salaries for full-time instructional faculty in 4-year public Title IV degree-granting institutions. It is broken out by State and includes the District of Columbia as a 51st data set. It is based on the 1998-99 salaries. For SOU floors, only the terminal degree floors are listed (without terminal degree is $2000 less) and higher values are for additional years in rank.

Overall --

National average was $55,948.
Oregon's average was $49,749.

14 States averaged less,
10 of which averaged more than $1000 less.
4 States averaged less than $1000 more.
Total of 18 out of 51 averaged no more than $1000 more than Oregon.

For (Full) Professors --

National average was $71,969.
Oregon's average salary was $61,858.

SOU's 9/16/98 floors were $44,811/$47,052/$49,284.
SOU's 2/1/99 floors were $49,293/$51,759/$54,216.
SOU's 2/1/00 (current) floors are about $52,254/$54,873/$57,474.

12 States averaged less,
9 of which averaged more than $1000 less.
1 State averaged less than $1000 more.
Total of 13 out of 51 averaged no more than $1000 above Oregon.

For Associate Professors --

National average was $53,641.
Oregon's average salary was $48,124.

SOU's 9/16/98 floors were $39,051/$41,265.
SOU's 2/1/99 floors were $41,400/$43,749.
SOU's 2/1/00 (current) floors are about $43,470/$45,936.
