SOU has always been popular with prospective students from the Willamette Valley.  Situated at the elevation of 2000 feet in the cradle of the Siskiyou and Cascade Mountain ranges, 15 miles from the Northern California border, we offer a fresh, outdoor mountain climate together with the stimulation of a first rate liberal arts university and culturally dynamic town. The climate in Ashland is moderate compared to the Willamette Valley (more like California!) with an average of 20 inches of rainfall per year compared to Eugene's 50 inches per year.  Expect about 265 rain-free days per year!  And, located only 3 hours from the Eugene, you're not far from home!

SOU is a small public university where you won't be a faceless number.  There are lots of friendly faces on campus; both faculty and students!.  We are proud of our small 19 to 1 student to faculty ratio and 25 student average class size which means you'll really get to know your professors and they'll know you.  Classes at SOU are taught by a faculty dedicated to teaching and not by graduate assistants like at some large universities. We're proud of the fact that 93% of our instructors hold a Ph.D. or equivalent highest degree.  SOU can offer you a solid liberal arts education where you learn to think broadly, creatively, and critically; all skills that are vital for your future success.

Our students are successful.  Thousands of SOU alumni throughout the world are thriving as civic and business leaders, educators, doctors, scientists, attorneys, and creative visionaries.  When our students and alumni talk about SOU, many say what they value in the education they received here is their relationships with professors who became their advisors and mentors.  Click here to see our School and College Fair Visit Calendar for the Willamette Valley and find out when we might be visiting you!
