- Do I have to live in a residence hall?
All newly admitted students who are single, have graduated from high school within the last year, and who do not live with their parents are required by the University to live on campus UNLESS they have written permission from their parent or guardian to live off campus. Living on campus offers many advantages to our students: Convenience, Cost, and Community.- Convenience: Living in the residence halls simply puts you in closer contact with the campus community and doings. You're close to classes and school events, have special parking lots so you won't have to search too much for a spot, and don't have to waste valuable study time preparing meals.
- Cost: The rates of living on campus are comparable to the costs of living off campus in the surrounding areas. We strive to make affordable housing available to everyone. Also, there are no hidden or surprise costs in furniture, deposits, or monthly bills. The rates students pay for their room are fixed, and will not fluctuate with increased costs.
- Community: The greatest advantage to living on campus and one in which we take great pride. You are able to meet people from all over the world (and perhaps your hometown). In hall programs or just hanging out in the lounge, you're bound to meet new people and make new friends.
- I'm coming from out of state. How do I arrange to have my belongings shipped to SOU?
Once you have been accepted at SOU, you will receive a packet of information from SOU's Residential Life Education and Services with your room assignment and shipping instructions for belongings. - Will the residence hall be open during breaks?
The residence halls are open both Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks. Food service is not available during both of these times, so be prepared to make your own meals or eat out during these breaks. For students needing housing during Winter Break, a conference hall will be open for residence hall students. Students needing housing over the Winter Break should contact Residential Life Education and Services for more information. - What kinds of activities and recreation are available at SOU and in the area?
Region: The town of Ashland, Oregon is a community of approximately 23,000 people located in Southern Oregon at the elevation of nearly 2000 feet. On the border with California, Ashland enjoys a moderate climate like California with less rainfall per year than other locations in the Pacific Northwest.
Recreation: Ashland is located in a dynamically beautiful natural region with Crater Lake about 2 hours away, Mt. Shasta about an hour away, and an abundance of rivers and mountains where winter sports abound as well as world-class rafting and fishing. In a September 2003 article, Outside magazine rated SOU 20th in a list of the best places to study offering an abundance of recreational opportunities.
Culture: Ashland is also in the center of an active cultural region being home to the world renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Schneider Museum of Art, and the Ashland Independent Film Festival. The Britt Music Festival in historic Jacksonville is only 30 minutes away.
