Summer Scenic Design Workshop for High School Students

Southern Oregon University’s Professor of Scenic Design, Sean O’Skea will lead a five-day intensive design workshop specifically for High School students who are preparing to enter their junior and senior years and are considering majoring in Scenic Design in college. The course will cover perspective drawing and sketching, watercolor and other design communication media, traditional model building techniques, and an introduction to drafting and computer aided design. Students will read several scripts in advance of the session that will serve as the basis of their design work.

Successful students will have acquired skills and portfolio materials that will give them a significant edge in college applications. One student from the program will be awarded a scholarship toward study in Design at Southern Oregon University should they choose to attend.

Students will study:  Effective graphic visualization techniques in a variety of media Basic measured drawing conventions to begin creating drafting and shop drawings Research and design development skills Basic script analysis for page-to-stage design implementation Effective communication and presentation methods   A brief introduction to CAD design and drafting software and techniques

Students will also take a backstage tour of the famed Oregon Shakespeare Festival and attend one production as a group. Students may also attend additional evening performances on their own.  In addition to Professor O’Skea students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with other professional designers from the Festival and Southern Oregon University.

Students should be prepared for an intense week of work with some significant preparation prior to attending. Serious, mature, students eager to learn as much as they can are encouraged to apply.

Acceptance packets will be mailed no later than May 30, 2013.  Acceptance forms must be postmarked by June 10 and be accompanied by a $200 deposit to hold your spot in the workshop.  Deposit and pre-workshop assignments will be included in the acceptance packet.
