Location

Programs of the Ashland Center for Theatre Studies are held on the beautifully landscaped campus of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, nestled in the foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains. Surrounded by rivers, lakes, and national forests and filled with cultural attractions, Ashland, a town of about 20,000, is made for walking. Within a twenty-minute walk from the campus, one may choose from more than fifty restaurants, delis, ice cream parlors, and bakeries. There are numerous specialty shops, bookstores, art galleries, and an open-air artists' marketplace. Lithia Park, with its duck ponds, paths, and crystal clear creek, provides an ideal 100-acre setting for picnics, strolls, and music concerts. Performing arts abound. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, America's largest repertory theatre, is one of several theatre companies in town. The Oregon Cabaret Theatre presents top-flight musicals, revues, and comedies. Britt Festivals, the Northwest's premier outdoor summer music festival, is just minutes away in the nearby historic town of Jacksonville.

Housing and Meals

You have the option of housing in University residence halls. Air-conditioned suites in Madrone Hall are available on a first-come, first-served basis (preference is given to students attending three or more weeks). Each Madrone suite has four single bedrooms and shares two bathrooms (one with a shower/tub combo and one with just a shower) and a small living room/kitchen. Each kitchen has a normal-sized refrigerator and stove/oven. No microwave. The building has an elevator.

If you need a double room (or we have more requests than we can fill for Madrone suites), air-conditioned rooms in a different hall are available on a first-come, first-served basis. These residence hall rooms have twin beds and a small refrigerator.

Bedding is provided. The rooms also have telephone jacks and internet access. If you wish to bring a telephone, you may use the local phone service for outgoing calls. If you plan on calling long distance, please bring a long distance calling card. Other items that you may want to remember are: soap and soapdish, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, laundry soap if you plan on using the laundry facilities, alarm clock, extra towels (colored to distinguish from the white ones that housing provides). You may want to bring a desk lamp.

A full meal plan is available with several entree choices, including heart-healthy and vegetarian options.
