Puppetry; Design, Construction and Performance: 

Registration for this course is closed (5/4/2012) 

Subject matter experts will lead students in a week long, extensive, workshop in the art of puppet design, construction, performance, manipulation techniques and scene work. Students will construct various types of puppets including ‘Avenue Q’ style and ‘table-top’ puppets. The week will culminate in a performance piece written, built and performed by students.

Faculty - May 11 Posted Faculty Change

Due to unforseen circumstances Lisa Buckley and Bob Fappiano have had to withdraw as the faculty of this course.

It is our good fortune that Steven Ritz-Barr, UCLA Puppetry Faculty member and professional puppeteer, has accepted our request that he step in to instruct the course.

Daily Schedule

7:00-8:00 am Breakfast
9:00-11:30 am Morning sessions: lectures, fabrication, manipulation, group work, etc.
11:30 am -1:30 pm Lunch
1:30-5:00 pm Afternoon sessions:  Drawing, assembling, personalizing, fabrication, group work, etc.
5:00-7:00 pm Dinner

Evening Schedule

Sunday 7/22 7:00pm Welcome reception, orientation 
Monday 7/23 7:00-9:00pm - screenings of puppet films
Tuesday 7/24 8:30pm OSF play - Media/Macbeth/Cinderella
Wednesday 7/25 7:00-9:00pm - screenings of puppet films
Thursday 7/26 7:00pm..... Finishing puppets and projects
Friday 7/27 8:30pm Party and Presentations

 Application Information

Application deadline is postmarked April 1, 2012. Space is limited to twenty students.

Prerequisite: Bachelor's degree or permission of the instructor. ACTS Master of Theatre Studies students get first priority. This course may serve as one of the required additional 3-credit courses toward the Master of Theatre Studies degree.

Complete the Elective Course Application Form and include application deposit and resume. Note: ACTS Master of Theatre Studies applicants do not need to send an additional deposit and resume, simply complete the name and address portions of page one of the Elective Course Application Form and submit it by the deadline.

We will send notification letters in mid April. At that time we will send you your pre-session assignment. You will be billed separately by SOU for your tuition and housing.

An application deposit of $50 ($80 if application postmarked after April 1, 2012) must accompany your application if you are not also applying for the Master of Theatre Studies.

Housing and Meal plan cancelations must be received by May 31, in order to be eligible for a refund.
Additional nights of Lodging
May be reserved at $55 per night, regardless of double or single accommodation; no meals will be available.
