In this week long intensive course, students will engage in a hands-on workshop learning hat making techniques for the theater. The goal of the class is to give students the tools to help them think creatively and manufacture many different kinds of hats.
Topics include:
- The making of fabric, buckram, straw, and felt hats;
- How to refurbish and resize old “dead” hats
- How to trim and decorate hats
- How to repurpose an existing hat into something new.
Come ready to work with your hands and have some fun.
Faculty
Maggie Dick, National freelance costume designer and draper.
Here's what our students say:
- "This is the best class I have taken at SOU."
- "Maggie was wonderful overall. The combination of activities, tours, the show we saw relating to our work, guest artsts and lectures was very well put together. Completely usable stuff."
- "She was very good at getting you to think for yourself and yet helping you when it was needed."
- "She obviously knows what she is talking about!"
