Alternate Format Text Resources
Southern Oregon University is committed to assisting our students become independent self-advocates. In that spirit, we offer the following resources for alternate format text. Some of these resources are open to anyone; some require documentation of print disability. Most are free.
We do our best to keep this list up-to-date, but the Internet is a highly volatile medium! If you find a broken link on this page, or have a suggestion for another site, please notify the webmaster.

Bookshare Enables people with disabilities to legally share individually created digital text of books. Now students of SOU can have a free individual membership! Go to http://www.bookshare.org/web/MembersJoinPrintableForm.html for the user agreement - fill it in online, print and sign it, and get it to Shawn Foster in Disability Resources. This will enable you to have an individual account for as long as you are a student at SOU! The iPhone/iPod/iPad app is now available and very popular.

Learning Ally: Primary suppier of textbooks in alternate format. Students who use alternate format text are highly encouraged to obtain an individual membership, especially as they graduate and move into their professional lives. Signups can be completely accomplished online. Membership and documentation of need required. Special players required; a software player is available free to individual members.

The Library of Congress National Library Service Materials available to borrow for free as audio recordings or Braille text. Documentation of disability is required.

Amerian Printing House for the Blind - Louis Database of Accessible Materials Louis lists the location information for over 180,000 books and other products in Braille, large print, computer file and audio recording.

SOU’s Online databases Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library has an extensive collection of books, journals, and databases available online.

Bartleby Publishes literature, reference works, and verse on the internet.

Bibliomania Publishes classic literature, study guides, reference works, and other text on the internet.

Project Gutenberg Thousands of free, downloadable public domain books. Also includes audiobooks. Never buy a classic again!

University of Virginia Digital Text Collection Contains thousands of publicly available e-books.

University of California Press The eScholarship Editions collection includes almost 2000 books from academic presses on a range of topics, including art, science, history, music, religion, and fiction.

Baen Free Library Authors who publish with Baen may post their works for online access - very limited list.
