COUNSELING
Personal Counseling typically explores such issues as personal growth and well-being, relationship problems, social and sexual struggles, self-esteem enhancement, academic difficulties, eating disorders, major life decisions, grief, depression and anxiety.
Students seeking counseling explore their ability to cope with life effectively by establishing a trusting and confidential relationship with a counselor. Counseling usually begins with an assessment of the student's concerns and goals. Our counselors possess the fundamental belief that individuals have worth, dignity, and the ability to solve their own problems by understanding themselves and their alternatives. People who are strongly motivated and willing to change, benefit most from counseling.
SERVICES PROVIDED
All currently enrolled students who have paid the student health fee are eligible for a free, confidential initial assessment. For an initial appointment, call the ACCESS Center at 552-6213 and ask about personal counseling drop-in times. During this time the counselor will discuss with the student counseling options, which may include individual counseling in the ACCESS Center or referrals to community counselors.
During the initial consultation it is determined whether you would most benefit from counseling here or referral to a community provider. We do not provide long-term ongoing counseling. Referrals to other services and agencies are made including for drug and alcohol treatment.
We have a staff of professional counselors who are here to assist you. Our staff is professionally trained in the areas of counseling, clinical social work or psychology. Under the supervision of a professional, graduate students in one of these fields augment the staff.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Counseling sessions are strictly confidential and counseling records are not available to other University offices or personnel, potential employers, or family without your explicit written permission. Confidentiality may also be waived if you sign a release to request that information be revealed to other agencies or individuals. Consultation among the counseling staff for supervision or case conference is not considered a violation of confidentiality. State law and the ethical standards of social work, psychology, and counseling mandate a breach of confidentiality under certain conditions, such as imminent danger of serious harm to yourself or others, physical and sexual abuse of children or senior citizens, and court order.
You may discuss specific questions about counseling or confidentiality with your counselor or the director of counseling services.
