The Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology
collaborates with the Coquille Indian Tribe, the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park
Service in conducting archaeological survey and excavation,
historical and ethnohistorical research, and oral tradition research
into the prehistory and history of the Coquille River in Coos
County, Oregon.  This project includes documenting the
location and condition of ancient Coquille Tribal places
as well excavations at selected sites in the context of Tribal
and Agency management objectives.  Since 1998, SOULA
has participated in work to map and salvage a shell midden
site located in Bandon at the mouth of the Coquille River that
was damaged during utility work, mapped archaeological sites
and conducted limited excavations on the South Fork Coquille River
as part of collaborative efforts with the Coquille Indian Tribe and the
National Park Service, and contributed to research at the Bussmann
and Blue Barn sites in the Ni`lestun Unit of the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service's Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.
