SOU Chamber Choir's Abendmusik to Raise Money for International Tour (10/27/08)

The Southern Oregon University (SOU) Chamber Choir has been selected to perform a series of concerts in Germany and the Czech Republic during spring break 2009. Highlights of the tour include a performance at the home church of J.S. Bach (Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany) and an invitation to perform at the International Festival of Choristers in Usti nad Labem outside Prague.

The performance at Thomaskirche will take place March 22, 2009, the Sunday night of Bach’s birthday weekend—and a highly desired concert time. According to Erin Harlan, Chamber Choir’s U.S.-based tour agent, the Thomaskirche concert selection committee was “very impressed with Chamber Choir’s audition tape and materials. They are always highly selective as to whom they invite to perform there, and to be awarded the Sunday evening performance of Bach’s birthday weekend is a real prize. This is a very big deal.”

The performance at the International Festival of Choristers is also quite an honor. “The festival will feature top-level choirs from Europe and around the world,” said Harlan. “This will be a great opportunity for both musical and cultural exchange.”

Other concerts on the tour include an evening concert at Pauluskirche, Berlin, (on Bach’s actual birthday) and a concert at Festssal Concert Hall in Leipzig. Chamber Choir’s director and SOU Professor of Music Paul French, DMA, says he and the group are already working hard on the tour program, which will include great music from the Renaissance and two commissioned works to be written especially for the tour. French says he is “thrilled to be able to assist in providing this kind of once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to SOU students. The group and I are both humbled and proud to be selected for these prestigious venues, and we will do our best to represent our region well.”

French is especially excited about the Thomaskirche performance. “To be able to sing in Bach’s church—the very place where he worked and is buried—is both exciting and a bit scary,” French said. “But this is just the kind of mountain-top experience that university students should have during their academic careers. I hope the entire region feels proud of our students’ accomplishments and will support them by attending Department of Music concerts.”

Funding for the trip is nearly complete due to strong institutional support, particularly from the SOU student government. To complete funding for the tour, the Department of Music has scheduled several fundraiser concerts. The first concert, Abendmusik (evening music), is an hour-long recital of art song and operatic masterpieces on November 15 at 8 pm in the SOU Music Recital Hall.   Twelve talented singers from the Department of Music will perform some of the most beautiful vocal music ever composed, accompanied by SOU opera coach Laurie Hunter. All proceeds from this concert and other Chamber Choir performances this year will go toward tour expenses.

Tickets for the above performance are $10 for general admission and free for students. Tickets and season passes may be purchased by calling 541-552-6101 or at the Department of Music prior to the performance. For more information call the Department of Music at 552-6101 or visit the department website.

SOU to Offer New MA Program for Spanish Teachers (10/23/08)

Southern Oregon University (SOU) will now offer students the opportunity to earn a master’s degree in Spanish language teaching.

The MA in Spanish Language Teaching was developed collaboratively by SOU foreign language faculty and local high school teachers. The program has a unique curriculum design that focuses specifically on the needs of middle school, high school, and community college Spanish teachers.

Held at SOU’s Summer Language Institute (SLI) in Guanajuato Mexico, the program consists of courses taken over three summers, as well as an action research project conducted between the students’ second and third year. The action research project allows students to apply skills they have learned in the summer program to their own classrooms.

Courses are designed to not only improve the students’ language proficiency and cultural understanding but also to provide them with the most current training on how to better teach a foreign language. National and international faculty members are invited to teach in the program based on their area of expertise, resulting in a diverse selection of faculty and courses.

“As opposed to other MA programs for teachers, I felt this program would benefit me, as a Spanish teacher, the most,” said one current student of the program. “In addition to classes that are specifically geared toward Spanish teachers, the program takes place in Guanajuato, Mexico, where language immersion and exposure to the culture are, in my opinion, the icing on the cake of the SLI program.”

SOU Hosts a Panel Discussion on Ballot Measures for Upcoming Election (10/23/08)

Southern Oregon University (SOU) is hosting a panel discussion about several of the Oregon ballot measures included in the upcoming election. The forum will be held on October 28, 2008, at 7 pm in the Meese Room of the SOU Hannon Library.

Economics professors Hassan Pirasteh, PhD, and Dan Rubenson, PhD, will discuss Measure 59 and its effects on state income taxes in the context of Oregon's tax system. Assistant Professor of Criminology David Carter will describe the effects of Measures 57 and 61 on prisons, the state budget and the outlook for crime and justice. There will be ample time for audience questions and discussion.

“The goal is to provide some factual background information, for example, about Oregon's tax and budget structure,” said Rubenson, “then discuss, from our professional backgrounds, the likely effects of these measures.”

For more information about the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra, please visit the website.

Rhett Bender is a professor of music at SOU and is an internationally recognized saxophone artist. He has presented master classes throughout the United States, Europe, China and Mexico. Southern Oregon University (SOU) is hosting a panel discussion titled “The Power of Sisterhood, the Perils of Masculinity: Gender in the Presidential Campaign.” The panel will be held Thursday, October 23, 2008, in SOU’s Stevenson Union, Room 330 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

The panel will present analysis and perspectives on how gender has shaped the 2008 presidential campaign. Questions to be addressed include the following:

  • How do images of femininity and masculinity play into the campaign?
  • How have women's candidacies been affected by stereotypes?
  • How are gendered tactics used to gain voters’ support?

SOU Department of Theatre Arts presents An Enemy of the People (10/16/08)

The Southern Oregon University (SOU) Department of Theatre Arts presents An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by D.L. Smith. Performances run Thursday through Saturday, November 6, 7, and 8 and November 13, 14, and 15 and on Sunday, November 16 at 8 pm. Matinees run at 2 pm on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16.

D. L. Smith's adaptation of this nineteenth-century drama places Ibsen's iconic character, Dr. Stockmann, in contemporary society. Stockmann's descent from respected citizen to community outcast is as relevant to today's political vagaries as it was for Ibsen in 1882.

"My interest in this play is its topicality," says director and Professor of Theatre Arts Dennis Smith. "It's amazing that we can live through the twentieth century with all its technological changes and still be struggling with questions of environmental pollution, corporate greed, and political machinations." Smith notes that the play is about an individual having the bravery to stand up for his own morality.

Dr. Thomas Stockman is responsible for a crucial economic development in his town, but the local mayor and news media thwart his efforts to redress contamination that comes to light.

Chris Carwithen plays Dr. Thomas Stockman, Deborah Jensen plays his wife Kate Stockman, Alex Yochim plays Mayor Peter Stockman, Gregg Land plays reporter Alexander Billings, Levi Goodman plays publisher Lawrence Hovstad, and Nick Walker plays businessman Perry Aslaksen.

Smith also directed the SOU productions of Arcadia and Hotel Paradiso in 2007. He has directed productions in the department since 1985, as well as for the Rogue Opera, Britt Festivals, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, and Lyric Theatre.

Set design is by Andrew Zehrung, costume design is by Katherine Nowacki, lighting design is by Laura Wiley and sound design is by Chris Sackett. Assistant director is Curtis Goodman and stage manager is Kryssa Bush.

Tickets are $18 regular, $16 senior, $5 students. Subscribers to three or more plays receive a discounted rate of $15 regular and $13 senior. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the SOU Theatre Arts Box Office at 541-552-6348. For more information, please visit the Music Department website.

SOU Hosts Award-Winning Marine Biologist Ballantine on Oct. 22 (10/9/08)

Southern Oregon University (SOU) will host a presentation by Bill Ballantine, PhD, on the need for highly protected marine reserves. Ballantine will present at SOU from 4 to 5 pm on Wednesday, October 22, 2008. The presentation will take place in the Science Building in Room 118.

Ballantine will be discussing the need for areas of sea where human interference is minimized to allow for natural wildlife to maintain, or recover to, a natural state. Ballantine asserts that although marine protected areas are common, marine reserves are very different as their purpose is to leave no human trace.

Ballantine has worked as a marine biologist in New Zealand since 1961. He was in charge of the University of Auckland’s marine laboratory for more than 20 years. Since 1986, Ballantine has worked to research, teach and publicly educate on the importance of marine reserves. He has received numerous awards for his work in the field, including an MBE (1994), a Goldman Foundation prize (1996), the NZ Marine Sciences Award (2003) and a QSO (2005).

SOU Hosts Panel Discussion on U.S. Economy (10/8/08)

Southern Oregon University (SOU) is hosting a panel discussion about the current state of the American economy on October 13, 2008, at 7 pm in the Meese Auditorium of the Center for Visual Arts.

Four SOU Economics Department faculty members will moderate the discussion, which will be open to audience participation. Questions to be addressed include the following:

  • How did the economy get into its current mess?
  • What's going on with banking and Wall Street?
  • What's the bailout plan recently passed by Congress, and how will it work?
  • What other government policies might help?
  • What are the international connections?
  • What will it take, and how long, for the economy to get back on its feet?

“Many of our friends have been asking us about what's going on currently in the economy,” said Professor of Economics Dan Rubenson, PhD. “While we don't have all the answers (and don't always agree), we do have a great deal of relevant knowledge and understanding. And as professors, we have considerable experience explaining complex economic ideas.”
