All Academic Conflicts are, at Root, Moral Conflicts.

A. Educated people are more ethical and self-reflective than others.
B. Those who disagree with me are less reflective than I, and therefore
less moral.
C. Those who disagree with my (means, methodology, discipline, etc.)
are opposed to my ethical goals.
D. Those who disagree with me outnumber me, have more power, and represent

2. Or an unthinking embrace of expedient trends.

A. Persecution is proof of intellectual integrity.
B. Stating your case in a fashion suited to different audiences is suspect
and compromising.
C. Martyrdom at the hands of the ignorant masses is the sublimest of
pleasures, the apotheosis of everything for which you've been trained. |

Self-Interest and Truth are Dichotomous Categories

A. You must never appeal to your own self-interest in the course of an
argument.
B. It is always better to speak on behalf of others instead of on your
own behalf.
C. You should never refer to ways you are empowered without apology or
guilt.
D. You cannot both criticize something and publicly acknowledge that
you benefit from it, especially if the benefits are structural ones which
you cannot avoid with out wide-scale social change. |
