Rebel: the structure of our economy depends on it. Rebellion is, at heart, a conservative action because it must conserve or replace the object it attacks. Without a center, there is no margin. There is no hip without squares. For the cultural rebel to remain who she or he is, the center must remain both intact and unaccepting. Bitch about your latest band selling out, but they (and you) were always already in the pipeline, moving from R&D (rebellion) to marketing. The strain toward differentiation between center and margin is only a sign of their mutual interdependency of the two terms. Rebellion is organized by gestures at pure opposition, yet it flounders, often reiterating and replacing the object of its rage, although always with a difference.

The idealized late capitalist subject position, pioneered by WhAnglo Research, is to be pure consumer, pure hunger, absence, a blank screen for goods to play across. The more of a consumer one becomes, the more ethnicity becomes an emptiness to be filled rather than an identity to inhabit.
Identity is a prothestic extension of product lines.

Resistance to Micro-Marketing is Futile
Take a hint: the only left that will endure must be prepared to cope with being bought and sold, packaged and marketed, digested and passed. It must be Post-Purity: Pure Identity, Pure Rebellion, Pure Altruism-- are marketing ploys. DECONSTRUCTION REBELS AGAINST REBELLION It eschews a doomed concern for purity by cultivating the impure, the corrosive, the profane intercourse of self and other. Instead of seeking to overthrow or separate from the establishment, it demonstrates how the establishment depends upon the margin for its very existence. It splinters frozen dialectics into kaleidoscopic uncertainties. Not negativity (for what is nihilism but the ultimate doomed rebellion against all--"what have you got?") but complication. The task is not to overthrow the center, but to complicate it to the point that it becomes untenable. As a spiritual path, it looks like Buddhism without piety. Deconstruction disposes with romances of Byronic resistance & defeat in favor of wry perversity.
