Before joining SOU's Education Department as part of the Special Education faculty, Wilkins taught English at South Medford High School for seven years, including designing, implementing and teaching in the STAR Alternative Program. Her areas of professional interest include curriculum and instruction, at-risk issues, classroom and behavior management, and creating classroom modifications that help insure success for all students. She is conducting ongoing research into the needs of alternative learners and non-traditional students, as well as into stress management for students and teachers with a focus on classroom community. As an artist and author, she also explores ways to nurture creativity--her own and that of others. Wilkins is committed to sharing a message of classroom caring and kindness, and to encouraging a celebration of the joy--and fun--of learning. She also teaches in the SOU Colloquium and is a collector of the weird and the wonderful.
